Frequently Asked Questions

What does the word Latinx mean?

Latinx is the gender-neutral alternative to Latino, Latina and even Latin@. Used by scholars, activists and an increasing number of journalists, Latinx is quickly gaining popularity among the general public. It’s part of a “linguistic revolution” that aims to move beyond gender binaries and is inclusive of the intersecting identities of Latin American descendants. In addition to men and women from all racial backgrounds, Latinx also makes room for people who are trans, queer, agender, non-binary, gender non-conforming or gender fluid.

How long is a therapy session?

When you are attending a therapy as an individual the average session is 50-55 minutes which is usually reffered to as a "therapeutic hour" and has become industry standard. A few therapist will offer 45 min, 60 min, or 90 min sessions depending on your needs and the modality used for treatment.

How will I feel after therapy?

Every session will be different, there are days where you can leave feeling emotional and other days when you feel leaving uplifted. We recommend trying to schedule therapy so that you have time to be alone or decompress afterwards especially if you are in therapy for the first time or dealing with a difficult life transition. Other things you can do to support yourself during this time is to make sure you are getting enough sleep, eating, and drinking water.

How do you verify therapists?

Once a therapist submits their listing we review all the information provided, check out their website, look for reviews online or red flags. Once that clears we proceed to verify that the license is active and valid for that specific state or states. We do not accept therapist who do not have a headshot. Lastly we do our best to talk over the phone or in person with therapists to make sure we are both mutually a good fit.

*You can simply do a Google search “therapist license lookup ________(state of your choice)” if you ever want to look up someones license yourself.

I can’t find a therapist, where else do you recommend I look?

Our database is created by the submissions we receive and volunteer work. We don’t have a list of every Latinx or culturally sensitive therapist. Our mission is to be a resource for our community. We want you to look wherever you need to go to find the right therapists for your needs. Usually the most practical advice we give is to call 211 in your state and usually they can give you the closest mental health resources to you. If you have insurance you can also call your insurance provider to provide you with listings. Otherwise here are some great options:

Cultural Therapy

Find a Multicultural Therapist

LatinxTherapy

Melanin and Mental Health

National Queer & Trans Therapists of Color Network

Open Path Collective

Psychology Today

Social Workers Help Starts Here

Why does it take so long to find a therapist?
We know that the process can be frustrating both through healthcare.gov and insurance plans through work depending on your carrier and the demand for the professional you are looking for. Most therapist can schedule a visit between 1-2 weeks if they are accepting new clients and psychiatrist can average about 2 months for openings. This issue is bigger than our platform, the mental health industry needs to change to meet the needs of our communities. Unfortunately there's nothing we can do personally about the time frame. We do share with people that this is normal so that at least you are going into it with realistic expectations. It's better to wait and get the support you're looking for than not see someone at all. In the meantime there are emergency mental health resources and support groups that you can attend.

I’m concerned about a therapist listed on your site, how can I report that?

We believe in having accountability in our communities. If there is a therapist, life coach, or resource listed who you believe is harmful to the health of others, behaves out of integrity, or who you believe is not a suitable therapist you are able to click on flag listing so we can further investigate this professional.
